Elias Thorne: The Anatomy of Residue

Residue is what a process refuses to account for. Thorne begins where the ledger ends: the soot on a kiln wall, the slag cooled into an accidental form, the sediment that settles once the furnace has been switched off for the last time.

Cast at temperatures that leave the glass permanently unstable, each work in this exhibition holds a suspended record of the air in the room at the moment it was made. Nothing here is inert. The works continue, slowly, to move.

Hung against the raw brick of the foundry annexe rather than a prepared wall, the sequence resists the neutrality of the white cube. What you are looking at is not an object placed in a room, but a room compressed into an object.
