Elias Thorne
b. 1974, Sheffield · Lives and works in Essen

“I am not interested in what a material was designed to do. I am interested in what it remembers having done.”
Elias Thorne works with cast glass, forged steel and the industrial by-products of the foundry floor. His practice emerged from a four-year residency in the derelict works of the Ruhr Valley, where he began collecting soot, slag and scale as primary media.
His work has been exhibited at Camden Art Centre, Museum Folkwang and the Glasgow International, and is held in the collections of the Arts Council and the Kunstsammlung NRW.
